Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Auburn, Ala. - The Auburn gymnastics team announced its post season awards at the end of the year banquet Saturday. Receiving honors were seniors Kayla Gies and Julie Dwyer, juniors A.J. Mills and Lindsey Puckett, and freshman Katie Hurley.

Dwyer received the Rock Award, given to the most consistent gymnast of the year. Dwyer is a three-time recipient of the Rock Award. She was also awarded Athlete of the Year, which she has earned four years in a row.

Dwyer represented the Tigers at the 2008 NCAA Individual Championships, becoming the first AU gymnast to participate in four NCAA Championships. She placed second on vault in the finals. She also placed ninth in the all-round and fourth in the vault preliminaries, becoming a First-Team All-American for the first time in her career. She is a two-time Second Team All-American. Dwyer also set a school record on the vault this season when she scored a 9.975 at Denver. The previous record, 9.950, was held by Dwyer and Kristi Boyte.

Gies was honored with the Wentworth Award. Named for Sarah Wentworth, an AU gymnast from 1997-2000, this honor is bestowed upon the gymnast who best exemplifies the Auburn Creed. Gies competed vault, bars and beam for Auburn in 2008.

Mills becomes the first Auburn recipient of the Bob Ritenbaugh Service Award. The award is given to the gymnast who goes above and beyond the gym and the university to reach out to the community.

This award is also given annually by the Penn State Gymnastics team. Known there as the Lee Kolo/Bob Ritenbaugh Service Award, it is given to an individual not directly involved with the team who goes out of his or her way to help the team in all possible ways.

Mills was named to the SEC Good Works Team this season for her efforts in the community. She was also a member of it in 2007. Puckett was named as the most improved gymnast. Puckett won four all-around titles in 2008, as well as 13 individual event titles. She was named co-SEC Gymnast of the Year as well as Central Region Gymnast of the Year. Hurley was named Auburn's Freshman of the Year. She competed beam and floor for the Tigers in 2008. Hurley competed the most routines out of all the AU freshmen
